Abstract

Objective: To establish a baseline standard for the medicinal herb Asarum cordifolium C. E. C. Fischer at Hoang Lien National Park.

Subjects and methods: Subjects: Rhizomes and leaves of Asarum cordifolium were used. Methods: Describing based on the analysis of the medicinal material's morphological characteristics; Microscopic analysis of histological sections and powdered material using microscopy; Moisture content, total ash, acid-insoluble ash, heavy metal content, and microbial contamination limits tested in accordance with the Vietnam Pharmacopoeia V; Quantification of total essential oil content by hydrodistillation; Analysis of essential oil components using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).

Results: A baseline standard for the medicinal herb Asarum cordifolium was established, encompassing 10 criteria: Description, histological characteristics, powder characteristics, moisture content, total ash, acid-insoluble ash, essential oil content, essential oil composition, heavy metal content, and microbial contamination limits.

Conclusion: The study herb successfully developed a baseline standard for Asarum cordifolium medicinal material. This provides a scientific foundation and proposes standards for this species, thereby enhancing quality control and contributing to the increased value of Asarum cordifolium as a medicinal herb.
