Abstract

Horner's syndrome is the result of an interruption of the sympathetic nerve pathway to the eye. This is uncommon after thyroidectomy, but it greatly affects the patient's vision and quality of life. Acupuncture is a potential procedure for this condition.

Objectives: To initially evaluate the effect of electroacupuncture in the treatment of Horner's syndrome after thyroid surgery.

Methods: Report a case of Horner's syndrome after bilateral thyroidectomy for cancer that did not respond to conventional medical treatment by electro acupuncture. Evaluation of treatment results based on the improvement of eyelid ptosis, upper eyelid movement amplitude, pupil size and sweating status.

Results: After 20 days of treatment, the degree of ptosis improved from grade II to grade I, upper eyelid motor amplitude increased from ≤ 4mm to >12mm, pupil diameter increased from 2mm to 5mm and left side started sweat secretion. Conclusions: Electroacupuncture showed efficacy in the treatment of Horner's syndrome after thyroid surgery.
