Abstract

Objective: To research the acute toxicity and the effects of TK-VNC liquid extract combined with electro-acupuncture in the treatment of lumbar spondylosis-induced low back pain.

Subjects and methods: 50 Swiss mice, both genders, weighing 25 ± 2 g, were used to assess the acute toxicity. A controlled clinical trial, comparing before-after and with the controlled group was conducted on 60 patients with confirmed diagnosis of lumbar spondylosis (according to modern medicine) and Cold-Dampness combined with liver-kidney deficiency Bi Zheng (according to Traditional Medicine).

Results: The maximum tolerated dose (always 50% less than the lethal dose) of TK-VNC liquid extract was 183 grams of herbs/kg of mice. Improvement in VAS index: After 30 days of treatment, the pain reduction effect was statistically significant compared to before treatment, with 30% of patients having no pain, 70% of patients having only mild pain and no patients having progressive pain. TK - VNC liquid extract did not cause clinical or subclinical side effects such as changes in hematopoietic, liver and kidney function.

Conclusions: The LD50 of TK-VNC liquid extract is 183g of herbs/kg. TK-VNC liquid extract combined with electro-acupuncture effectively relieved pain, improving range of motion and NPQ score indexes on lumbar spondylosis without side effects.
