Excipients affecting the preparation process of toothpaste with ingredients from semen areca catechi extract
Main Article Content
Abstract
Objective: To sort out thickeners, humectants, surfactants and abrasives that ensure the highest antibacterial ability of toothpaste from Arecae seeds (Semen Arecae catechi) extract.
Subjects and methods: Change excipient type and ratio in toothpaste formula. Select excipient type and ratio based on antibacterial ability of toothpaste using disk-diffusion test on 3 bacterial strains: Enterococcus faecalis, Lactobacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus.
Results: The diameter of the antibacterial ring in 3 strains E. faecalis, L. subtilis, S. aureus when examined with thickener Natri carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC) (3g), humectant Sorbitol (40g), surfactant Natri lauryl sulfat SLS (2g) and abrasive agent CaCO3 (45g) were 19mm: 14mm: 17mm; 16.5mm: 14mm: 14.5mm; 19mm: 15mm: 16.5mm; 20.5mm: 16.5mm: 18.5mm, respectively.
Conclusions: Toothpaste with ingredients such as thickener NaCMC (3g), humectant Sorbitol (40g), surfactant SLS (2g), abrasive agent CaCO3 (45g) has the highest antibacterial ability on 3 strains of microorganisms E. faecalis, L. subtilis, S. aureus.
