Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the effects of catgut-embedding and acupressure on relieving pain and improving lumbar spine movement in patient with sciatica due to wind-cold.

Subjects and methods: A prospective study, comparing before and after treatment, controlled on 60 patients diagnosed with sicatica, type of Wind-cold according to traditional medicine at the National Hospital of Acupuncture from June 2023 - December 2023.

Results: After 15 days of treatment, the research group using catgut-embedding and acupressure had an average VAS score reduced from 5.3 ± 1.3 to 0.4 ± 0.7; Significant improvement in pain level compared to the control group at days 7 and 15 after treatment (p<0.05). The study group had better lumbar extension and lumbar spine range of motion than the control group at day 15 after treatment (p<0.05).

Conclusions: The method of catgut-embedding and acupressure is safe and effective in reducing pain and improving lumbar spine mobility in patients with sciatica.
