Abstract

Objective: To assess the drug - disease interactions requiring caution in prescriptions for elderly outpatients at Huu Nghi hospital in 2023.

Subjects and methods: Building a list of drug-disease interactions, cross-sectional descriptive study and collecting data on drug prescription for outpatient treatment of elderly patients at Huu Nghi hospital in 2023.

Results: The list of outpatient drug-disease interactions requiring caution in elderly at the hospital includes 183 pairs. The number of outpatient prescriptions featuring this interaction is 1,708 prescriptions (4.0% of total prescriptions for the elderly), mostly 1 pair/prescription (94.5%). Cardiovascular drugs are most frequently involved in these interactions (1,344 pairs), followed by NSAIDs (226 pairs). The disease most commonly associated with these interacttions is Gout, with 1,230 pairs (67.8%). The highest proportion of drug-disease interaction pairs is telmisartan-hydrochlorothiazide with Gout (32.8%) and valsartan-hydrochlorothiazide with Gout (21.2%).

Conclusion: According to the list of outpatient drug-disease interactions requiring caution that has been ectablished, 4.0% of prescriptions for the elderly feature this interaction. However, the majority of interactions per prescription involve only one pair. Among these, cardiovascular drugs and NSAIDs are the most common, while Gout is the most frequent disease encountered. The highest proportion of interaction pairs involves cardiovascular drugs and Gout.
