ANALYSE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DRUG USAGE IN GOUT OUTPATIENT PATIENTS AT SAINT PAUL GENERAL HOSPITAL

Abstract
Objective: To analyse the gout patients’ characteristics and drug usage at the outpatient Department of Saint Paul General Hospital.
Subjects and Methods: This study used a retrospective cross-sectional descriptive method on outpatient gout patients based on information collected from medical records. The study period was from October 2023 to April 2024.
Results: The average age of the study sample is 66.9 ± 8.5 years old, the youngest is 41 years old, and the oldest is 86 years old. Men (65.4%) were more prevalent than women (34.6%). Comorbidities account for a proportion (99.1%), most patients have three comorbidities, accounting for 51.4%. Diabetes with the highest proportion (34.3%), hypertension (17.4%), and other cardiovascular diseases (16.9%). Serum uric acid was 451.1 ± 114.3 μmol/L at time T1, the average serum uric acid decreased to 405.1 ± 122.0 μmol/L at time T2. Most of the other paraclinical indicators were within normal limits. The proportion of patients using Allopurinol alone was the highest with the longest duration of use in the study sample with an average of 30 ± 2.0 days (T1) and 30.6 ± 2.7 days (T2).
Conclusion: In 107 patients analyzed for age, gender, paraclinical characteristics, and use of gout treatment drugs, the majority of patients were elderly, mainly with diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. Uric acid-lowering drugs, anti-inflammatory drugs, and colchicine were used alone or in combination to treat gout in patients.
