Abstract

Objectives: To investigate the influence of several factors during the extraction of semi-finished liquid extract and several excipients on the quality of the liquid extract, and to propose a preparation formula for To Moc Huyet Giac Chi Giap Hoa Thang (TMHG) liquid extract.


Subjects and methods: The study varied the ratio of factors affecting the extraction process of semi-finished extract. Parameters were selected based on the total flavonoid content in the extract. The study also varied the proportions of excipients including Tween 80, NaCMC, and citric-citrate buffer system in the extract peparing formula. Selection was based on sensory evaluation, taste, and pH of the liquid extract.


Results: The semi-finished extract was prepared via decoction with a herb/solvent ratio of 1:24 for 2.5 hours (3 extractions). For the final formulation (104 ml), essential oils were distilled separately, while the remaining herbal materials were decocted to obtain 52 ml of liquid extract. This extract was combined with 0.3% NaCMC, a buffer system (0.08 g citric acid; 1.5 ml 10% NaOH), and sodium benzoate. Finally, 0.35 ml of essential oils, pre-solubilized in 0.7 ml of Tween 80, were added to complete the preparation. The mixture is stirred well, and RO water is added to a final volume of 104 ml.


Conclusion: A formula and a preparation process for 104 ml of TMHG liquid extract have been successfully developed, using 24g of Artemisiae vulgaris, 16g of Curcuma longae, 24g of Lignum Dracaenae, 20g of Lignum Sappan, and 20g of Folium Lawsoniae.
