Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of laser acupuncture combined with acupressure in the treatment of Bell’s palsy due to cold exposure and monitor adverse events of the treatment method.

Subjects and methods: A pre-and post-treatment clinical trial was conducted on 35 patients diagnosed with Bell’s palsy due to cold exposure at Tue Tinh Hospital from October 2024 to May 2025. Patients were treated with laser acupuncture combined with acupressure for 20 days. The evaluation was based on the House-Brackmann 2.0 scale and facial nerve conduction velocity at three time points: D0, D10, and D20. Adverse events were monitored and evaluated.

Results: The mean House-Brackmann 2.0 score decreased from 15.34±2.25 (D0) to 5.8±2.13 (D20) (p<0.001). The proportion of patients with good recovery increased from 37.1% to 94.3%. The facial nerve conduction velocity significantly improved from 28.14±2.4 m/s to 34.6±2.2 m/s (p<0.001). No adverse events were recorded.

Conclusion: The combined method is highly effective and safe in the treatment of Bell’s palsy due to cold exposure, improving facial muscle motor function and nerve conduction velocity.
