Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the analgesic effect of electroacupuncture combined with spinal manipulation and herbal compress in patients with cervicalgia due to cervical spondylosis.

Subjects and methods: A controlled clinical intervention study was conducted on 80 patients aged ≥18 years who were diagnosed with cervicalgia due to cervical spondylosis at the National Hospital of Traditional Medicine. Patients were divided into two groups. Both groups received electroacupuncture and spinal manipulation according to the Ministry of Health protocol for 15 consecutive days, while the intervention group additionally received herbal compress therapy. Pain intensity and functional disability were assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the Neck Disability Index (NDI) before and after treatment..

Results: After 15 days of treatment, the mean VAS score of the study group decreased from 5.35 ± 0.62 to 1.35 ± 0.62, significantly greater than the reduction observed in the control group (from 5.25 ± 0.71 to 1.98 ± 1.14; p < 0.05). The NDI score of the study group decreased from 20.68 ± 6.77 to 5.93 ± 3.97, which was a greater reduction compared with the control group (from 19.75 ± 8.73 to 13.50 ± 6.02), with a statistically significant difference (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Electroacupuncture combined with spinal manipulation and herbal compress is effective in reducing pain and improving function in patients with cervicalgia due to cervical spondylosis.
