Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the results of acupuncture, massage, and acupressure combined with CIMT exercises in restoring upper limb motor function in patients with first-time cerebral infarction.

Subjects and methods: A controlled clinical intervention study was conducted on 76 patients with first-time cerebral infarction according to modern medicine standards and belonging to the Qi deficiency and blood stasis type according to Traditional Chinese Medicine. Patients were purposefully divided into two groups: a control group (n = 38) treated with electroacupuncture combined with massage and acupressure, and a study group (n = 38) treated with electroacupuncture, massage, and acupressure combined with Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT). The treatment duration was 20 days. The effectiveness of upper limb motor function restoration was evaluated before and after treatment.

Results: After 20 days of treatment, upper limb motor function improved in both groups. However, the study group treated with electroacupuncture, massage, and acupressure combined with compulsory motor therapy (CIMT) achieved better results than the control group, as shown by statistically significant improvements in HMS, Fugl–Meyer, MAL, BBT, and Nine-Hole Peg Test scores (p<0.05). The rate of good and fair upper limb motor function recovery was higher in the study group than in the control group (76.4% vs. 60.5%; p<0.05).

Conclusion: Combining compulsory motor therapy (CIMT) with electroacupuncture and massage enhances the effectiveness of upper limb motor function recovery in patients with first-time cerebral infarction compared to electroacupuncture and massage alone.
