The characteristics of traditional medicine symptoms in patients with stroke treated at multiple hospitals in Northern Vietnam, 2023-2024

Abstract

Objectives: To describe the characteristics of Traditional Medicine symptoms in patients with stroke treated at multiple hospitals in Northern Vietnam.


Materials and methods: A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted using medical records of inpatients diagnosed with stroke who were treated at Yen Bai Provincial General Hospital, Yen Bai Provincial Traditional Medicine Hospital, Lao Cai Provincial General Hospital, and Lao Cai Provincial Traditional Medicine Hospital. The study analyzed medical records from January 2023 to January 2024.


Results: The most prominent Traditional Medicine symptoms among stroke patients were hemiplegia (89.1%) and speech disorders, including slurred speech, dysarthria, or aphasia (73.1%). Other frequently observed symptoms included dizziness (76.6%), numbness of the limbs (75.7%), blurred vision (74.0%), and sleep disturbance or insomnia (56.6%). Additional Traditional Medicine signs appeared with lower prevalence, such as deep and thready pulse (48.3%), facial paralysis (48.6%), red tongue body (36.9%), yellow tongue coating (34.6%), limb spasticity (28.9%), and petechiae or blood stasis spots on the tongue (28.3%).


Conclusion: Traditional Medicine symptoms in stroke patients were predominantly characterized by hemiplegia and speech disorders, accompanied by dizziness, numbness, blurred vision, and poor sleep. Other symptoms, including deep thready pulse, facial paralysis, red tongue body, yellow tongue coating, limb spasticity, and petechiae on the tongue, were observed at lower frequencies.
