Abstract

Objective: To determine the prevalence of and demand for auricular acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment for hypertension, and to identify factors associated with the demand for auricular acupuncture among hypertensive patients at primary healthcare facilities in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam.

Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 500 hypertensive patients. A multivariable logistic regression model was employed to identify factors associated with the demand for hypertension treatment using auricular acupuncture.

Results: A total of 3.2% of patients had used auricular acupuncture for the treatment of hypertension, while 43.8% expressed a need for hypertension treatment using auricular acupuncture. Educational level, place of residence, blood pressure classification, time of hypertension diagnosis, and diabetes mellitus status were significantly associated with the demand for auricular acupuncture treatment (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The demand for hypertension treatment using auricular acupuncture was moderate and influenced by factors such as educational attainment, place of residence, timing of disease diagnosis, and comorbid conditions. These findings suggest the need to strengthen health education and develop integrative models combining conventional medicine and traditional medicine to improve hypertension management at primary healthcare facilities.
