Abstract

Objectives: To describe the current status of knowledge and identify associated factors regarding stroke risk factors and warning signs among fifth-year medical students at the Vietnam University of Traditional Medicine during the 2024–2025 academic year.

Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted on 436 fifth-year medical students who had completed their Neurology clerkship and provided informed consent. The study was carried out at the Vietnam University of Traditional Medicine from January 2025 to January 2026.

Results: 60.3% of students had adequate understanding of risk factors of stroke, 23.6% of students demonstrated outstanding knowledge while 16,3% of students had poor knowledge. Regarding warning signs of stroke, the rate of students having poor awareness made up 45.6% and the proportion of students having adequate understanding accounted for 43.6%. Only 10.8% of students were proficient in recognizing warning signs of stroke. There was a relationship among Neurology module, difficulties in clinical problem-solving and students' knowledge.

Conclusion: Medical students demonstrated a relatively solid understanding of stroke risk factors; however, their recognition of warning signs remains suboptimal and warrants targeted educational interventions. Clinical training and active engagement with real-world clinical cases serve as key determinants in improving students' competency.
