ASSESSING ANALGESIC UTILIZATION IN POSTOPERATIVE PEDIATRIC PATIENTS AT VIET DUC HOSPITAL

Abstract

utilization of postoperative analgesics at the Department of Pediatric and neonatal Surgery, Viet Duc University Hospital, during the last six months of 2025.


Subjects and methods: A cross-sectional retrospective descriptive study on 135 pediatric patients aged 0 to under 18 years who underwent surgery and were followed up postoperatively at the Department of Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery, Viet Duc University Hospital, was conducted from July 1st, 2025, to December 31st, 2025.


Results: The cross-sectional total sample size was 135 pediatric patients, male patients accounted for 80.0%; the age group from 6 to under 12 years had the highest proportion (34.1%). Urological and genital surgery accounted for 75.6%. Endotracheal intubation was the most common method of anesthesia (34.1%). VAS pain scores were recorded in only 32.6% of patients; The initial treatment protocol was primarily an intensive postoperative analgesic regimen (73.3%), with paracetamol being the most commonly used medication, mainly intravenously.


Conclusion: Intensive postoperative pain management was the main method of pain relief. Paracetamol was the most frequently chosen systemic analgesic. The low rate of recorded postoperative pain scores indicates the need for improved standardization of postoperative pain assessment in pediatric patients.
