Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the results and unwanted effects of moxibustion-infrared lamps combined with electroacupuncture in treating sciatica.
Subjects and methods: A prospective study with open clinical intervention was held, comparing before and after treatment, comparing between two groups of a total of 60 patients (30 each) with a confirmed diagnosis of sciatica according to the criteria of Modern medicine, VAS < 6 points, belongs to the type of low temperature associated with kidney failure of traditional medicine. Treatment group (n=30): Electroacupuncture based on the protocol of the Ministry of Health combined with moxibustion-infrared lamp. Control group (n=30): Electroacupuncture based on the protocol of the Ministry of Health combined with infrared lamp.
Results: The method of electroacupuncture combined with moxibustion-infrared lamp had a good effect on the treatment of sciatica by reducing pain and improving the range of motion of the lumbar spine (p<0.05).
Regarding the pain level according to the VAS scale, the treatment group had better pain relief than the control group with p<0.05. The treatment group's lumbar spine range of motion improved significantly compared to the control group. The quality of life according to the ODI scale in the treatment group was better than that of the control group (p<0.05). The method of electroacupuncture combined with moxibustion-infrared lamp in treating sciatica did not cause any unwanted side effects in 60 study patients.
