Abstract

Objectives: To describe clinical characteristics and investigate factors associated with the distribution of traditional medicine (TM) patterns in patients with peripheral facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) palsy treated at Tue Tinh Hospital during 2022-2023.

Subjects and methods: A retrospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 85 medical records of patients with peripheral facial nerve palsy who were treated at Tue Tinh Hospital from 2022 to 2023.

Results: Patients were distributed across various age groups, with females accounting for 56.5%. The proportion of late hospital admission (>72 hours) was 63.5%. Common clinicalsymptoms mainly involved facial motor dysfunction, including mouth deviation, incomplete eye closure, and a positive Charles - Bell’s sign. Cold exposure was the predominant etiological factor (90.6%), corresponding to the predominance of the wind-cold traditional medicine pattern (91.8%). Typical manifestations of the wind-cold pattern included aversion to cold and wind, a floating-tight pulse, and a thin white tongue coating. Statistically significant associations were observed between etiological factors and TM patterns (p<0.05), as well as between past medical history and TM patterns (p<0.05).

Conclusions: Peripheral facial nerve palsy occurs across all age groups, with most patients had a delayed presentation. Motor-related symptoms were common. Cold exposure and the wind-cold pattern were predominant. These findings provide clinical evidence to support traditional medicine-based diagnosis and treatment.
