Some factors affecting the extraction efficiency and alkaloid content of areca seeds (semen arecae catechi) extract

Abstract

Objectives: To determine the suitable solvent concentration (Ethanol), temperature and time for the highest efficiency and total alkaloid content of Arecae seeds (Semen Arecae catechi) extract.


Subjects and methods: The extraction proceduce of Semen Arecae catechi was conduced using fractional distillation; The total alkaloid content in the extract (arecoline) was weighted using acid – base titration according to Vietnamese Pharmacopoeia V.  


Results: 3 times extraction with 60% EtOH at 60℃ in 12 hours gave the optimal result with 64.48% extraction efficiency; the average total alkaloid content (arecoline) was 0,4572%.


Conclusions: The extraction efficiency and the total alkaloid content of Arecae seeds (Semen Arecae catechi) extract are influenced by solvent concentration (ethanol), temperature, time and the number of extractions. Extracting 3 times with 60% ethanol solvent, in 12 hours, at 60℃ is the optimal extraction condition to obtain the highest extract volume and alkaloid content.
