Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture combined with rehabilitation in the intervention for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Subjects and methods: This was a controlled clinical intervention study conducted on 70 children aged 18 months to 11 years, diagnosed with ASD according to DSM-5 criteria. Participants were included upon obtaining informed consent from parents or legal guardians. The children were randomly assigned to two groups: the intervention group (35 children receiving acupuncture combined with rehabilitation) and the control group (35 children receiving rehabilitation only).

Results: The majority of participants were male (>80%), with a mean age of 3.8±1.1 years in the intervention group and 3.3±1.4 years in the control group. After three months of intervention, the mean Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) score in the control group decreased by 3.8±2.43 points (from 43.6 to 39.8), while the intervention group showed a greater reduction of 7.2±1.9 points (from 45.1 to 37.9). The reduction in CARS scores was significantly greater in the intervention group compared to the control group with a statistically significant difference (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Acupuncture combined with rehabilitation therapy yields superior outcomes in the intervention for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder compared to rehabilitation therapy alone.
